This is how the scheme is supposed to work: families in dire poverty are helped first to survive and then to invest so that they can support themselves and offer a future to their children. Once they are stable, they graduate from the scheme and the money can be used to help another family in need.  <br />

Nearly half of all children in Malawi live in poverty. Their families struggle to provide the very basics in life - clothes, food, shelter, medicine and a chance to go to school. For many, no matter how hard they try, this struggle ends in failure. So UNICEF is targeting the very poorest and most desperate families and giving them a little bit of money each month. The sums are small, but they make a huge difference.
