Most of these migrants live in the shadows. Two thirds of them are unregistered. They are usually paid less than the minimum wage and have little protection from employers who cheat them or local officials who demand bribes under threat of deportation back to Myanmar (Burma). For many, deportation would mean prison, torture or death at the hands of the Burmese junta.<br />

Like migrant communities all over the world, the Burmese in Thailand are often reviled by their hosts. as lazy, dirty and dishonest. The truth, as always, is completely different.
