Of the 19 HIV-positive children in Albania, three of them are from the same family. Their father was infected after a blood transfusion and unknowingly passed the virus on to his wife. She, in turn, passed it on to her children. These two boys, the youngest in the family, were forced out of school once other parents and teachers got to know of their HIV status. Their mother hopes they live long enough to see the stigma of HIV in Albania begin to fade. <br />

Albania's HIV epidemic is concentrated among injecting drug users and other high-risk groups, but has the potential to spread into the rest of the population. The NGO Stop AIDS, supported by UNICEF, offers information and health services to heroin addicts in the capital Tirana to reduce their chances of becoming infected.
